Granted, this is not a rare state of mind for Shinwoo. If anything, it's more rare to find him in a mood that isn't some form of angry - even if it ranges anywhere from mild annoyance to fury. But this time it isn't over one of the smaller, more common things in life. Annoying people to deal with at work, annoying bosses to deal with at work, another spat with Sunhye, realising this is what his life amounts to now when he's dropping down on his bed in their apartment by himself half-drunk to just try and feel something else in his life.. those are the usual things. Not good things, no, but the usual things. You get used to even the shittiest of things after a while, even if it might partially kill you inside.
No, this is something he has every right to be furious about. Sure, to say his relationship with Sunhye is kind of on the rocks right now would be the biggest understatement in the world, but to think that she would just go off and cheat.. and not just with anyone, no, with the very former best friend that screwed up his life this badly to begin with. It's like a horrible case of irony, except Shinwoo isn't the one that can be uninvolved and laugh about it. Just thinking about it makes his blood boil and immediately makes the desire arise to punch whatever is nearest - and the most Kwangjo-shaped, for that one.
Not that he hasn't gotten some of the frustration out already. Youngjo sure got part of it when he told him about it, and then by the time Shinwoo got himself plastered afterwards and stumbled home halfdrunk, at least he had calmed down somewhat in the morning. Slightly. Not enough to not make him mad all over again at the thought of what he had only now heard of (and, if it wasn't for Youngjo, something he still wouldn't know of, despite how long this might have been going on already), but enough to not render him unable to go outside without wanting to punch literally everything. Which is acceptable enough, right? Sure. It's what he'll go with.
It's calm enough to finally reply to one of Kwangjo's endless texts that still haven't stopped after all this time to tell him to meet up without immediately slinging curses and insults at the other.
That's got to be worth something.
He only confirms to make sure he got an affirmative reply from the other before hurriedly putting on a coat and making his way out to where he asked him to meet - a cafe not too far from his house. Except he isn't planning on going inside and waiting for his former best friend at a table. It's not exactly a conversation he wants the whole world to be listening in on, after all. So instead he waits outside for the other, hands balling into fists so tight in the pockets of his coat that his knuckles turn white. ]
[ In all honesty, Kwangjo hasn't meant to start up a sexual relationship with Sunhye. It had nothing to do with some antiquated idea of morals keeping his hands off his former best friend's fiance, but more the fact that Kwangjo hadn't expected Sunhye to give into his incessant flirting. Sure, Kwangjo could tell part of her thrived off the flirty cat and mouse, cop and criminal game they had going, but he hadn't actually thought at any point she'd let his hands wander over his body without stopping him, or let any part of him inside her.
He certainly didn't expect it would happen multiple times.
And yet here he is, fucking Shinwoo's girlfriend with relative frequency and little to no regrets. He's already fucked Shinwoo over in so many ways, what's one more type of screwing (more literal than most) to add to the list at this point?
So yes, when Shinwoo finally relented to Kwangjo's constant texting with no fight? It didn't take Kwangjo long to come up with a list of possibilities as to why Shinwoo was finally agreeing to meet him. Kwangjo's affair with Sunhye was at the top of his list, but other possibilities included but were not limited to Shinwoo finally snapping and wanting revenge for what Kwangjo had done to him so long ago, or just being tired of getting all the texts he couldn't escape.
All of the scenarios that Kwangjo could concoct ended in one simple way: with Shinwoo's fist in his face.
A beatdown wasn't something Kwangjo was overly interested in being on the receiving end of either, so he brought a little insurance with him in case Shinwoo really lost his shit during this confrontation. As Kwangjo stepped out his expensive import car and muttered something to his driver about taking a few laps around the neighborhood before checking on him, he also reached back behind him, hand pushing up under his jacket so his fingers could brush against the smooth metal of a loaded gun tucked safely away, but easy to grab if things got rough.
A cafe wasn't the ideal place to be pulling out a weapon, but Kwangjo assumed if Shinwoo was going to do more than give him a few quick jabs in the face that he'd be looking for somewhere more private to do it.
Shinwoo, for all his anger, wasn't the kind of person Kwangjo could see making that kind of move anyway, but Kwangjo always preferred to be overly prepared than deal with the consequences of assuming things would work out for the best.
Fixing an easy smile onto his face he walks down the street towards the cafe, lazily lifting a hand when he sees Shinwoo several yards away. ]
[ This is exactly why it's even easier to get so constantly angry at the very thought of Kwangjo. Sure, the main reason is the fact that the other fucked up his life to a point where it's hard to enjoy anything at all anymore. But if it had just been that, and Kwangjo didn't mean to fuck up his life that bad and showed genuine remorse and changed his ways, then things might have been a little better. Shinwoo still would have been screwed out of his dream job, sure, and he still might not exactly have been happy, but he wouldn't have thrown his best friend out of his life completely the way he had.
But how can he forgive the other when he just acts like this? Wronging him that badly in the past, but instead of showing any sort of conscience just going on with it by fucking his fiancee too and then treating everything so lightly? He used to think the world of the guy, and now that thought just makes him feel sick to his stomach. It's not as if he didn't already notice Kwangjo drifting to the wrong side of things a little while before their friendship ended, but he never imagined it'd go this far. He never imagined there'd be a day where he could see his best friend's face and feel nothing but disgust.
Then again, there are a lot of things about his life right now that he never would have imagined back then. And not exactly in the positive sense. ]
... That's all you have to say?
[ He raises an eyebrow questioningly. He's certainly not hiding the fact that he knows shit is up - it's written all over his face. It's not even as much an incapability to hide these things as much as what Kwangjo is thinking is just true. Despite the fact that he desperately needs to learn a thing or two about anger management, Shinwoo isn't a bad person. Not the kind of person to beat someone up in a dark alley - if he's angry at someone, he'd just hit them even if the entire world was watching. He's not subtle, but it means he's not shady either, and it certainly means he has no problems with being upfront about his intentions now the other is at least in front of him and more than just words on a screen.
He doesn't move to do anything though. Yet. He doesn't seem all that threatening other than the fact that his body is very tense right now. Because no matter how angry he is, if Kwangjo could show at least an ounce of humanity, of giving a shit at all, then..
.. well, no, it's still very likely Shinwoo will punch him in the face anyway. Some things just can't be avoided. But he sure isn't holding back because he knows Kwangjo is carrying a gun (he doesn't know it, doesn't even expect it), at least. It's just the fact that Shinwoo is too good when it comes down to it, to a point where he almost hates it. ]
Really? Nothing else? [ Even aside from the "sorry I'm banging your fiancee who's been leaving you in the cold when it comes to that for months now" situation, there's not even remorse for the past.. but then again, maybe he should have expected it. It's not like the other showed it even back then, after all. ]
[ Kwangjo raises his own brows slowly, like he's actually pondering Shinwoo's questions. He knows what this is all about, he knows what Shinwoo wants to hear from him, but he feels like Shinwoo should know him well enough to know it's not going to happen. If Kwangjo was the type to apologize for his actions he would have done it a long time ago when he ruined Shinwoo's life in the first place.
Honestly? In comparison goading Shinwoo's fiancé into cheating on him seems like such a petty crime, and Shinwoo should be thanking him for not doing any more than that. In fact, Kwangjo's almost certain that Sunhye's a hell of a lot more pleasant to be around after she's gotten some dick in her.
Ungenerous thoughts towards his former best friend and his fiancé or not, Kwangjo still has the sense to keep those thoughts to himself. He'll definitely get decked the moment Sunhye's name leaves his lips, and if he makes a comment about his dick in the same sentence? He's probably a dead man, gun or no gun.
Saying that he'd wanted to fuck her before realizing she was engaged to Shinwoo probably wouldn't help either, especially since Kwangjo at least knew the entire time that Sunhye had a boyfriend, even if he didn't know the name of the man until a little more recently... and had slept with Sunhye at least half a dozen times since finding out she was Shinwoo's girl anyway. ]
Am I supposed to say something else? This is how someone normally greets an old friend.
[ Old former friend, but details. Details that will probably matter, because he kind of doubts that implying they're still friends is going to do much to warm Shinwoo up to him. Ah well, you live and you learn, and you get read to duck out of the way when fists start flying.
Speaking of which, Kwangjo finally comes to a complete stop a little ways outside of Shinwoo's reach. It doesn't really protect him, but it at least gives him a little time to try and dodge out of the way when his ex-best friend tries to lunge at him and tackle him to the ground. ]
[ It's a wise decision to at least stay those few steps out of his range - Shinwoo might be a good guy, but it's not like he's always in control of his temper. By a long shot, in fact, as people who know him would be able to attest to. Even though he isn't planning on punching in Kwangjo's face just yet, if the other manages to hit him verbally just in the wrong spot, there's no telling what will happen.
This so far is fine though. Relatively speaking. Even though the implication that they're still friends annoys Shinwoo more than anything (really, Kwangjo really thinks that he'd still consider being friends with him the way they used to be after what Kwangjo did to him?), it's not like it's enough for him to snap and actually start using violence. Thankfully, because otherwise absolutely nothing productive would be coming out of this meeting.
He's not even that surprised that his former best friend doesn't even apologize or admit to banging his fiancé, despite knowing that he must know. It's just how he is. It's exactly why Shinwoo completely threw the other as far out of his life as he could those years ago.
(Still annoying, though. How could the guy he cared so damn much about and had so much fun with turn into--) ]
We're not normal old friends. [ It's an almost childish sort of answer, despite everything about Shinwoo otherwise being fairly manly and adult - but there's almost something petulant about the way he says it, like a stubborn kind drawing a line in the sand and telling another kid to not cross it.
He knows he is right though. It's not like they naturally fell out of contact and are reuniting now or anything.. It was all a lot more drastic than that, and it's exactly why Kwangjo's attitude irks him right now. Can't he at least acknowledge anything for once? Just one thing? How can he brush off absolutely everything like it's nothing, even the stuff he did and in fact keeps doing to him?
Shinwoo doesn't move though, so that's a plus. He just stands there, keeping his hands in the pockets of his coat - almost as if he's too afraid to pull them out, since they'll be leading a life of their own once he gets too angry. ]
[ No, Kwangjo doesn't think for a second that Shinwoo ever wants to rekindle their relationship. It is a shame, because in his own twisted way Kwangjo really does miss Shinwoo. Kwangjo may not have ever been a good person at any point in his life, but there was a point when he wasn't as terrible as he is now. Shinwoo knew him during that time...
There are moments when Kwangjo is sitting in his large studio apartment, the girls he convinced to come home with him that night asleep, naked on his bed, while Kwangjo stares out the floor to ceiling windows tossing back enough alcohol to numb any trace of genuine human feeling he still has lingering himself him. Before that numbing kicks in, however, or sometimes backed by the liquor in his system, Kwangjo finds his thoughts wandering to Shinwoo, and missing his friend.
His "old friend" who sounds like a child throwing a tantrum over having to say it. He probably is, and if Kwangjo had any decency he'd drop the ruse. Shame then that Kwangjo didn't have a shred of decency in him.
Kwangjo reaches up to idly scratch at the side of his neck, smiling almost lazily at Shinwoo as he considers the comment. ]
Maybe, but we are still old friends.
[ It's hard to tell if he's trying to goad Shinwoo into attacking him or not, because the look he gives him could be read as both fond and patronizing all at once, considering their history and Kwangjo's current indiscretions. ]
[ It doesn't take more than a second for Shinwoo to read into the look on the other guy's face as patronizing. Not even because that's 100% objectively what Kwangjo is going for or anything - no, Shinwoo is just so bitter towards said old friend at this point that there's no way he'd interpret anything Kwangjo did as something positive. His mind will always find a way to put a negative spin on Kwangjo's actions, and although in some cases that isn't difficult (like when Kwangjo bangs his fiancé, for starters), in some cases it's definitely Shinwoo being biased against him.
So it just gives him the feeling that Kwangjo only wanted to talk to him all these times and bombard him with texts just to make fun of him over everything. To look down on him like this. Putting emphasis on the fact that they used to be friends even though Kwangjo did absolutely the most to ruin their friendship - even if that hadn't been the other's intent when shit first went down.
His fingers twitch. He knows it's probably for the best right now that he left those hands in his pockets, but he also knows that he can't turn around the topic he wanted to talk about so badly that he actually called Kwangjo out here forever. Unless he wants to suffer through more of Kwangjo's annoying innocent behaviour and patronizing looks. ]
It's about Sunhye, you bastard.
[ Shinwoo figures Kwangjo can't hop around it anymore when he brings it up like this, right? Unless he's really going to pretend that he isn't having an affair with his fiancé right in front of him now. He knows it'd be a lie - Youngjo has become a whole lot of things, doubtlessly due to the bad influence of his brother in Shinwoo's eyes, but there's no reason at all for him to lie to Shinwoo about Kwangjo and Sunhye having an affair. ]
[ So this was what it was about after all. Kwangjo can't really say he's surprised, though he is wondering who it was that spilled the beans to Shinwoo. They still have a few mutual acquaintances, though most of them wouldn't be aware of his affair with Sunhye. Of course, Sunhye herself might have snapped and rubbed the truth into Shinwoo's face. In fact, right now that's Kwangjo's working theory, instead of his younger brother being the horrendous shit he is and telling his former best friend everything.
That said, if Shinwoo tells him it was Youngjo? Kwangjo wouldn't be even a little bit surprised.
He won't be fishing for sources though, because in all honestly Kwangjo doesn't care who told Shinwoo that his fiance was cheating on him with Kwangjo. It was only a matter of time, and he was well aware of that. It's why he's not going to deny it either. It's certainly not from some sense of nobility, and respect for his friend that has him offering Shinwoo a tight lipped smile that doesn't reach his eyes. ]
Ah...
[ Maybe now would be a good time to take a few more steps back, but he'll stand in place for now. It's unlikely he's getting out of this without at least one punch to the face. He'll just have to be careful to make sure that Shinwoo doesn't break his nose. ]
[ At least Kwangjo isn't denying it, but it's hard to say this response to it is that much better. Hell, maybe it would have been better if he tried to deny it - it'd make it seem like he at least gave a damn about the situation, rather than smiling so vaguely and not really saying anything.
Seriously, that's what he's going with? He's calling him out on making his fiancé cheat on him, and that's all he has to offer?
Maybe he shouldn't have expected any better from Kwangjo, but getting this reaction on the spot is definitely enough to make Shinwoo's temper flare up. It's not a difficult feat, considering how easy it is to step on his toes, but usually the very sight of the other (or even just a text from him) is enough to make him angry.
Let alone this.
So he is going for a punch. There's still a small distance between them, so Kwangjo would have seen it coming even if he didn't predict it already like he has, but Shinwoo's fist sure is flying at his face right now without any further verbal explanation. It doesn't really need one. ]
[ He saw it coming the minute Shinwoo told him while he was here, but the distance does give Kwangjo enough time to try to turn his head and keep the damage from being too severe. Still, a punch to the face sucks, and for an office worker Shinwoo seems to pack a lot of power behind that blow.
Kwangjo reels backwards, stumbling to the side before catching himself. It's honestly amazing he didn't fall flat on his ass, all things considered. He does know better than to stay within range of Shinwoo's fists though, and he quickly scrambles backwards, eyes darting back and forth as he takes in his surroundings.
He'd rather talk things out if at all possible, but he will make a break for it if he's forced to. Kwangjo never claimed not to be a massive coward, and he's not interested in taking Shinwoo's punches, no matter how much he "might deserve it". ]
