June 1869 Having decided to stay together no matter what with their new bond, Chizuru and Shinpachi sneak out of Edo to travel to the north once they hear of Hijikata setting up the Ezo Republic there, regretting earlier bad blood. Their journey is a slow one because of the imperial forces having taken over everywhere though, and before they fully make it to Hakodate they hear the news of Hijikata's death. Knowing the only remains of their time with the Shinsengumi are each other, the two instead go to find Kodo and the secrets behind the rasetsu in an attempt to prolong Shinpachi's life. They manage to find Chizuru's father among the ruins of the old village of the Yukimura, but the man has already been driven mad after the loss of practically all his rasetsu during the war. There's no choice left but to put him down, but with his dying breath he reveals the secret of the water near the village.
