Maybe that's to be expect. Maybe he shouldn't he surprised. After their graduation mission, Shuusuke had spent a few hours in the hospital, getting looked over. The vest had kept bullets out of his flesh, true. But, even with bullet proof vests, you still tended to get wounds. Shuusuke had had a big painful bruise, in the middle of all the bruises Souma had inflicted on him when they were punching each other out (which was another horrible thing.) That ghost of a bullet wound had been like the epicenter to all his other bruises. Enough to warrant doctor's fussing over him. Then they'd both been scolded for their clear lack of sleeping and eating, and Souma had wanted to argue that they couldn't help it. Stress was an insidious kind of disease.
Of course, he could have helped it, probably, if he hadn't been such a flawed person.
However, that's neither here nore there. The point is that clearly Eiri's wounds, whatever they had been had far surpassed everything that had afflicted Souma and Shuusuke.
And like Haku he... abruptly doesn't want to talk about it directly. The guilt of leaving seizes his throat, like a choking fist, and even if it wouldn't have killed Haku to ask- which it probably would- it might kill Souma to learn just how much things went wrong without him. (really, Souma is such a shitty, cowardly person at times.)
Though if Haku wanted to yell at him, or hurl invectives, that might be almost refreshing? Sakura had a way of trampling normal human expression, and Souma might be okay with Haku's hatred if he got the sense that Haku was growing into himself. Learning to ask for what was his.]
I'm glad Eiri made it.
[They keep taking about Eiri in the present tense, so he assumes Eiri is still alive. Sometimes he wonders though. Sometimes it feels like someone died, and Haku doesn't have a lot of people to mourn, even though he tends to mourn fiercely in his way. It's not Eiri, and a lot of Haku's comrades either died before him or graduated before him. So who could it be?
Well. There was his Haku's brother... Long gone, but probably still alive, and definitely enough to send Haku into a fugue state.
Could it be...?
Or maybe Souma is dealing in conspiracy theories. Probably so. The more Haku grows comfortable, the younger Souma feels right now. He messes around with the machine they have for making tea. It's something to do. Souma hopes he looks more confident than he feels. He hopes he seems as caring as he feels.
Oh, that's an interesting question from Haku. A small blessing to both of them. They'd wandered a little too far into dangerous territory.]
If I ran into Shuusuke again... [For a moment he wants it so much its like needing water after hiking a steep mountain. In the desert.] To be honest I'd like to live normally in Japan but that's probably not an option for me, if we're being practical.
[Officially speaking, Gojou Souma had been "executed for treason." He knows for sure it shocked his family and friends. They still had questions about it, and wondered if they could have prevented him from going down the wrong path (he knows because he's seen posts about it on some of their social media pages.) Being officially dead meant no one demanding the government find their missing son or missing friend. It also meant that there was little chance of starting again in this country.]
I guess living in America would give us the same problem. [He's pretty sure Shuusuke is "dead" there too, but from an accident rather than from treason. But it's Shuusuke's other home, and he knows it's missed.]
But I guess, since we're talking about the ideal thing, then.. Yeah. I think I can make a home for myself in most places and I'd like to be with him. Maybe we can go buy an uninhabited island together and make our own laws. And you can come visit whenever.
[He pauses, debates asking this, and decides to do it.]

Where would you want to go if you had the chance?
