ic; i don't even dare to post this self indulgent shit into buttshipping help
[ His eyes are closed for a moment as he leans his head backwards against the hard and rough wall of the slightly run down bathroom building of the gas station they stopped at for the time being. Sweat trinkles down the side of his head with how hot it is out here in the middle of the desert, but Josuke can't even bring himself to pay any attention to it. Instead he just stands there with his eyes closed, almost a little troubled, as he counts his heartbeats. One, two, three, four. Although it used to make him a little more calm whenever he felt like he might have flipped out otherwise in the past, nowadays they only remind him of the fact that time is ticking away every single moment. Every single second brings them a second closer to the moment Minako's time is destined to stop. And it's only by now that he's found time is like sand - the more he tries to hold onto each and every precious moment, the more they all seem to slip away from him until it's already too late.
Not that he doesn't try his hardest all the same for both their sakes. And it's not that he doesn't enjoy every moment with her, because by god he does, of course he does, but at the same time he feels so hurt and scared when he thinks of the fact that she's going to slip away from him and everything else, and there's nothing he can do to stop it. He can't protect her. Even though he would've done anything.
Josuke has been trying his best though to not let Minako on to his mood. It's only now she's using the bathroom and he's waiting outside for her by himself that he can let his troubles overcome him for just a moment, only when she can't notice. She's the one who's suffering. He can't be the one to have a hard time here, she needs him, she should be able to be at least as happy as she can be and do whatever she wants to do, so he has to force himself to be strong as always. Dependable like a rock.
Isn't that what he always does?
It's why when he hears the sound of a toilet being flushed and then water pouring into a sink that he quickly straightens up, opening his eyes and taking in a deep breath. Come on, dude, man up-- you've faced worse than this, right? (Except it's never really been worse than this.) ]
Yo, Minako, if you're gonna take any longer in there then I'm just gonna assume you flushed yourself down too! [ At least he manages a joke, speaking up loudly so she can hear him even inside there - he doesn't care if anyone else hears, honestly. ]

crying 5x and i haven't even written anything yet
How long has it been? What day was it now? She both wanted desperately to forget the days and dates but also keep track of them like her life depended on it, a prayer to no one that she didn't want answered. No matter what the date was, March 5th always seemed like it was coming too quickly and so far off. Minako didn't like to think about it, not when she was having so much fun just spending time with Josuke like this, but it was also impossible not to think about. She knew she was running on borrowed time (again) but it's not like she knew March 5th would be the definite end either. There were too many unknowns, too many possibilities, and she sighed as she let go of the sink.
It was just like before when she first thought of this, and still she had no answers. She probably wouldn't get any. Slapping her cheeks, she whispers to her reflection.]
Come on, enough of that! Smile already, smile! [If she didn't, then who would? Despite his attempts not to show it, it was funny how things worked out when you loved someone; Minako could tell he wasn't always at his 100% best during this. She wants to tell him he doesn't have to, that it's fine to be sad too, but that means bringing the topic of her death for the millionth time it feels like. Even once more feels like too much.
With a cheery smile, she finally steps out of the bathroom, looking at Josuke curiously.]
There, I'm out! Now where next are we off to, captain?
my life right here
But he can't linger on it. He stares at her for a moment longer than he should have, maybe, but he's quick to drape his arm over her shoulders instead, holding her close to him like that. As long as he can still feel the shape of her body and the warmth of it through a touch, she's here and safe with him. Like just maybe he can somehow protect her from the world and fate just by holding her loosely. ]
There's a nice camping spot out there in the desert just calling our names, that's what we're headed for! [ Complete with over the top gestures with his free arm, like he's really pretending to be a captain to play along with it. ] Might be nice to have some time with just the two of us and no one else around, yeah?
[ As he's talking he's already guiding her back over to the motorcycle. ]
all day errday my god i want to die already
With Josuke's arm around her so comfortably though, she doesn't want to think about any of that. Maybe later, but for now she walks with him back to the motorcycle and gives a loose salute with her hand.]
Aye, aye, sir! I can't say I've ever gone camping before, but it sounds fun already.
you can't die yet i need you for the rest of this thread....
[ Even though there were about a dozen of bee stings and a broken wrist involved in all of it, but nothing Crazy Diamond couldn't fix for the other guy.. And it's not like there could be an exact repeat of that out here in the desert of all places. Josuke intends to fully watch over Minako during any of this - if she's weakening and becoming more tired over time, then like hell he's going to let her get anymore hurt during it.
It's why he just (gently) picks her up once they're next to the motorcycle before plopping her down on the back seat again. ]
All you gotta do is provide us with some cheer, got it? [ Because he has to keep her cheerful somehow. Even if at times his heart feels like it's going to be ripped apart at the very thought that maybe he won't be able to see her smile again in due time, he wants to make her as happy as he can, at least. ]
idk you just said you were done with ships in the buttchat
That all? Providing some cheer is way too easy for me! [Her smile is bright and sincere; you'd never think that the idea of never being able to do something as simple as smile in time was on the back of her mind.] I think I can handle a little more responsibility.
THAT WAS MY SHADOW
After that he moves to sit onto the motorcycle himself though - without a helmet since SCREW THE POLICE and how are you going to fit his hair in one of those either way - and once he's sure Minako's holding onto him, he drives off on it. At least the spot he had in mind shouldn't be too far from here and they brought some stuff along with them for the camping part, so.. that part should at least happen perfectly. Or so he hopes, at least. As long as Minako's like this, as long as her life might be ticking away, he wants to be able to make everything perfect for her and give her a chance to still experience everything.
In a weird combination between excitement and anxiety he drives a little faster on the road. There's no one else around either way on this desolate road. ]
BUT THAT MEANS THAT WHAT YOU SAID WAS TRUE ANYWAYS JUST IN A REALLY DEPRESSING WAY
Don't go too fast now, okay?! [She practically has to shout it to make sure she can be heard, but despite that it's not said like a reprimand in the least.]
i just want to break out of my masochistic ways but i can't :(
[ Of course there's no way he's going to drive irresponsibly though while having Minako with him like this.. well, not too irresponsibly, there's some kind of weird natural recklessness in it that he can't really help either since it's just part of what he's like. But at least he knows he can't let anything happen to her now-- but a little playful riding can't hurt, right? It's why he turns up the speed even a little more, letting out a loud and lively laugh as the scenery whips past them. Her grip on him is a reminder of the fact that she's here, that they're together, and that now more than ever they have to enjoy life every single moment they can.
His laughter becomes louder until it practically shakes his body just a little bit, enough for her to most likely feel. ]
Everyone make way, highway royals coming through!
:'( it's an endless cycle
When they speed up, Minako lets out a small yelp despite trying not to. It's always a little scary to be honest, but that's part of what makes it so exciting, so thrilling. Even was weary as she is these days, riding on the motorcycle makes her feel like she's truly alive, and it's hard not to feel anything else when she's with Josuke. Feeling the rumble of his laughter through his back, she can't help but laugh too.]
Who are you even talking to, it's just us on the road! [With how there's not a soul to be seen for miles, it really does feel like it's just them two in the world. It's a selfish thought and she knows it, but for just a little she thinks that that's all she wants. A world with just the two of them.]
no subject
[ Like he's announcing their arrival to the world or something. Besides, actually shouting loudly is pretty good for him at the moment since it helps him destress and at the same time it cheers him up and eggs him on too, making everything a lot easier to bear. He can scream at the world that they're here and that it's going to stay that way for as long as he can manage to drag her on. They're here together-- do you hear that, world? They're not going to give up this soon. Or at least, he isn't, and he's pretty sure she isn't going to do it easily either. ]
That's why there's no one there, they're all turning around the moment they hear it!

Deal with it, the highway's ours now! Just ours!
[ But it's hard to miss the way she clings against his back tighter, like she's leaning against it more, and with the way she's been lately it immediately sets off alarm bells in Josuke's mind. Sure, he doesn't want to be overbearing, but he at least has to make sure.. when he speaks up again, his voice is a lot softer. ] .. Hey, don't fall asleep though. We still have the whole day to go.
no subject
Jeez, don't worry about that. I'm not planning on sleeping for a while!
no subject
[ Yeah, of course you aren't, Josuke.. especially with your tone there, that's totally convincing. Of course he's worried. He's never stopped worrying for a single moment ever since he learned the truth, even though he manages to at least push it down sometimes to let go and have some fun with her. She deserves it now more than ever. ]
I'm just... [ That totally isn't a pause to make up an excuse. At least he can pretend it's since he's focusing on the road for a moment. ] .. lookin' out for you.
no subject
You're doing plenty of looking out for me already, alright? Relax a little.
no subject
He doesn't exactly want to promise to not worry since he knows he can't live up to that. So instead he tries to change the subject. ]
.. Oh, look! We're already here, this is where we're gonna camp out! [ He hits the brakes of the motorcycle until it's fully stopped on the side of the road. ]
no subject
no subject
You can get the rest of the stuff, right? We'll just dump it a little bit away from the road so we won't get woken up by cars or whatever.
no subject
[She's just teasing though.]
no subject
[ It's a joking comment more than him actually being angry though and it's very easy to even just tell that from his tone as he says it. He knows Minako's just teasing about the way he words things as simply as possible.. but it's true that is pretty much literally dumping the stuff on the floor the moment he reaches a good spot, turning around to see if she's managing at least. ]
Like hell we're gonna sleep out in the open, we at least need a tent! My clothes're gonna be ruined if we just sleep on all this sand and dirt! [ Granted, Josuke's priorities are always sort.. of.. bad.. but at least this time he's exaggerating it as a joke. ]
no subject
Honestly, you and your clothes. [She shakes her head, exasperated but fond.] Maybe you just need to hit it rich so you don't worry about them at all again.
no subject
Well, I did almost win the lottery once. [ Except it didn't go as well as planned.. ] Though I guess I shouldn't keep hopin' it'll just happen twice in a row, huh? Maybe I should find some job that pays really well..
no subject
Hey, you never know, right? If you were actually lucky enough to almost win once, who's to say you're not lucky enough for it to happen twice? [Minako that is the exact kind of logic that makes people go broke at casinos.]
no subject
Maybe. [ Not that he likes thinking about the future a whole lot anymore, not since they discovered what's going to happen to Minako most likely sooner or later. So the answer comes a little wryly and he shrugs, not directly looking at her but instead still working on the tent over here. At least it's not going too bad so far.. ]
I'm not sure if mom's gonna like that a whole lot though. She'd probably yell I'm some bum like dad!
no subject
Haha, it sounds tough! [a beat] But now I'm kinda curious. Could you tell me more about your mom, actually?
[About a person she'll never actually be able to meet. But it'd be kind of nice to at least imagine it, right? After ten years of being on her own and most her friends back home either being the same or otherwise estranged from their parents, it's nice to just hear about a good parent in general.]
no subject
But despite the heavy feeling it gives him, he grins, drops the tent stuff he was working on halfway through and instead saunters over Minako, draping an arm over her shoulder and moving with her until they're sitting down on the ground next to each other, practically huddling together with his arm like that.
For once he doesn't really care if all the stupid sand is getting all over his designer pants. ]
You sure you wanna hear? She's pretty scary.
no subject
Anything at all, really. But she must be pretty scary if even you're saying that. Why don't we start there? [She'd listen to anything and everything about Josuke's life back home to be honest, but there's something heartwarming in learning about the person who raised him.]
no subject
.. she's pretty great. I mean, yeah, she's scary as hell, but it's just since she can be really strict sometimes, y'know? I guess she had to be since she raised me all by herself 'cause dad ran off after getting her pregnant.
no subject
no subject
I dunno if she'd agree with you. [ She probably would and Josuke knows it too, but he can't help but joke about it a little. She did complain a lot about his late night gaming.. ] I mean, it's not like we become who we are just 'cause of our parents, y'know? Everyone we meet has some kinda influence on us.
[ .. for a moment he gets more quiet and then stares at her. ]
Like you on me.
